Volunteer Spotlight: Javier Luna

In this spotlight, we’re highlighting Javier Perez Luna, a finance major from the University of Texas at Dallas. Javier is currently in his sophomore year, and he’s been volunteering with our tax assistance program. Below are his thoughts on the program, his experiences, and the impact it’s had on both him and the community.
When he first heard about the program, Javier wasn’t sure he could manage the intricacies of tax preparation, especially the tax rules. At first, he was anxious about filing taxes and didn’t think he would be able to learn all the information required. But after taking part in the program, his viewpoint shifted. He was given an actual test question during the bootcamp, which was difficult but gave him a thorough grasp of the procedure. Everything fell into place after he grasped that tough question, and he felt more confident about moving forward.
Javier’s first day at the site was fraught with uncertainty. He wasn’t sure where to go and was hesitant to approach anyone. Despite his initial nervousness, he chose to proceed, and he was greeted with a friendly, encouraging environment. He was guided through his first tax return, and the team supported him every step of the way. Javier felt reassured knowing that someone was always accessible to offer advice and answer questions.
Javier learned about the huge financial burden that tax services may have on individuals through his voluntary work. One memorable experience involved a client who was charged $400 for each ITIN, with three dependents to be processed. The client simply couldn’t afford the cost, highlighting the importance of the program in helping those who are vulnerable to being overcharged.
For him, this has been a two-way street. Not only has he been able to assist others, but he has also gained valuable skills that will benefit him for the rest of his life. He now feels confident in preparing his own taxes without worrying about making mistakes. Volunteering has given him a greater understanding of tax preparation and practical information that he can apply both personally and professionally.
Javier encourages others who are thinking about volunteering to get started right now. He believes that the experience provides not just an opportunity to give back, but also an opportunity to learn new skills, such as understanding credits like the American Opportunity Credit, which he now uses on his own tax forms.
